Oasis Transformation Ltd (OTL)

OTL has a dynamic business ethos which brings together commercial business, environmental integrity, concern for poor communities, with technical innovation and excellence. Globally, there is an accelerating realization of the need to totally re-think business practices and lifestyles in the light of climate change, and unsustainable use of the planet’s resources. There is also a new awareness of the injustices of international trade, and the connection between poverty eradication and people living in peace. On a local level, to escape from poverty the poor need real, dignified, well-paid employment opportunities, created by commercial businesses which have a concern for holistic development, of the communities in which they are based.

Bamboo forest

The global market for sustainable wood replacement products is growing. With technology transfer from India and China OTL will produce quality Bamboo and Jute based products, drawing in a sustainable manner on resources from some of Bangladesh’s poorest rural communities. We are also researching business using Jute and Solar Energy, and in the future would like to develop business ventures in Food Processing, IT and Consultancy Services.

"...suppose an entrepreneur... now has two sources of motivation, which are mutually exclusive, but equally compelling - a) maximisation of profit and b) doing good to people and the world."

Mohammad Yunus

"...many people assume, wrongly, that a company exists simply to make money. While this is an important result of a company's existence, we have to go deeper and find the real reasons for our being."

Jim Collins

Oasis Community Projects (OCP)

All OCP projects currently run in partnership with local and international organisations registered here in Bangladesh. OCP will be registered as a local legal entity during the course of 2008.

Working alongside our local partner the Duaripara Family Development Project (DFDP) was started in the latter half of 2004. Today DFDP has a staff team of ten, and is working alongside 200 poor families in this community. Duaripara has a population of around 12,000 people, and is a mixture of brick and tin structures; many of the people work in export oriented garment factories. At our “hub” in the community we are providing educational opportunities for nearly a 100 young girls, healthcare for families, and basic skills training to stimulate economic growth.

Two cute smiles

In many countries Oasis is a key partner in the Stop-the-Traffick, anti-human trafficking initiative. In Bangladesh Oasis has been involved in networking meetings and the formation of a new anti-trafficking network. This has involved connecting with colleagues in Mumbai, with a view to repatriating people trafficked into exploitative situations in India.

OCP staff have recently completed research on issues connected with “children at risk” in the context here. Children from poor families and those living on the streets face many challenges and are often at risk of abuse or exploitation. Oasis already works with girls in the Duaripara slum community, providing education and training. We intend to start further initiatives amongst marginalised groups of children.

Using material developed in partnership with a UK based management consultancy, OCP plans to deliver innovative leadership development material covering subjects such as life-long learning, emotional intelligence, project management and team-working.

"We can play here. We can laugh here. We read stories and draw pictures. I can write my name now in Bangla and English. I can go shopping in the market now too. I’m learning how I can keep myself and my younger brothers healthy. I want to be a responsible person, established and with a good job – perhaps a teacher or doctor."
